What size furring strips are required?
A minimum thickness of ¼” (6 mm) is required for horizontal applications. However, diagonal and vertical applications require a minimum thickness of 1” (25 mm).

Width of furring strips must allow a 3/16” to ¼” gap between siding pieces (at butt joints) and enough space to allow nailing of both siding pieces.

Can you provide me with pricing for LP’s CanExel siding products?
Because we do not sell direct to builders or consumers, you must obtain pricing from your local lumber and siding retailer.

Can I repaint my LP’s CanExel siding?
Yes. Remember, because it is a wood product, you must use 100% pure acrylic latex (water-based) house paint. However, this should only be done after careful surface preparation, including proper cleaning. See Technical Bulletin #6CP “Re-finishing of LP’s CanExel Hardboard Siding” for details. Repainting LP’s CanExel siding within the first 15 years after installation will void the finish warranty.

Installation

Do we have to use strapping (furring strips) when installing LP’s CanExel siding?
Furring strips are recommended to help aid in ventilation behind the siding. In some areas such as coastal provinces, furring strips are required. Check your local building codes to ensure proper installation.

What type of fasteners can I use to install my siding?
Nails, screws and staples are acceptable fasteners (refer to nailing bulletin for additional information). However, the fastener must go through the siding, the furring strip (if required) and penetrate into the framing member by at least 1-1/4” (1-1/8” if spiral nails are used). If you use a pneumatic nailer care must be taken NOT to countersink the nail. LP does provide colour-match nails for areas where nail heads will show (over doors, under and over windows).

Can I install LP’s CanExel siding to 24” on-center framing?
Only if siding is nailed on studs and at midpoints between studs. Plywood or OSB sheathing must be 3//8” minimum thickness. And, where strapping is mandatory, the strapping must be located over the studs at 24” O.C. and at the 12” midpoint. See Technical Bulletin #10SR “Nailing into Plywood or Waferboard” for more details, which will include diagonal and vertical applications.

Maintenance

How do I touch-up small scratches or nicks on the surface of my siding?
We sell touch-up paint to match each siding colour we manufacture. For our stain products there is both touch-up and refurbisher, which is applied over the touch-up paint. Touch-up paint is best applied with a small cotton swab (Q-tip) or with a small artist brush, just covering the area requiring paint. laTouch-up products can be purchased through your local LP’s CanExel siding retailer. Application of touch-up paint does not affect the warranty for finish.
